PHYSICAL
Yellowfang is a scraggly dark gray she-cat with unkempt fur, and glowing orange eyes set in a rather flat face.

PERSONALITY
Yellowfang is ornery and bad-tempered at first glance; she certainly contradicts the usual medicine cat stereotype, being fierce, unsympathetic and insulting. Yet at the same time, she comes to be known as one of the wisest cats in the series. She is loyal, brave and more caring then even she would admit, but her hard past and ShadowClan complex hides all this to only a few she has grown close to, and those who are sharp enough to see through it.

HISTORY

INTO THE WILD
Listed as Cat Outside the Clans: Yellowfang
Yellowfang is banished from ShadowClan when Brokenstar frames her with the death of two kits. She travels, injured, to ThunderClan territory were she is ambushed by Firepaw. He takes pity on her, and Bluestar is interested to have such and important prisoner -- Yellowfang was ShadowClan's former medicine cat. Firepaw must care for her, and when a ShadowClan patrol attacks ThunderClan, Yellowfang fights alongside ThunderClan. She is invited to stay in ThunderClan for her loyalty. Later on ShadowClan's Clawface steals kits and murders Spottedleaf, and Yellowfang is held responsible by the revenge-thirsty ThunderClan. Instead Firepaw and Graypaw find her on ShadowClan territory, trying to rescue the kits, and with her help ThunderClan liberates ShadowClan from Brokenstar's tyranny.

GENERAL
Yellowfang was a warrior before being a medicine cat. She fell in love with Raggedstar, the leader of ShadowClan when she was a medicine cat. When she knew she was to have his kits, she regretted her decision to break her oath, yet Raggedstar was oblivious, overjoyed to have kits. Yellowfang hid her secret well until she left camp to have her kits. Two died, the only one who survived was a tom with a broken tail, whom she named Brokenkit. With fear in her heart, Yellowfang brought Brokenkit to Raggedstar, and he gave his kit to Lizardstripe, a ShadowClan queen, to raise. It was assumed by the Clan that the kit belonged to Foxheart, Raggedstar's deputy.

Yellowfang grew up to watch the destruction of her Clan around her. Raggedstar appointed Brokentail as deputy, and he soon succeeded his father in leadership. Brokenstar was a cruel, bloodthirsty leader, and he eventually exiled Yellowfang from ShadowClan (without knowing she was his mother). Yellowfang stumbled to ThunderClan territory, where she met Firepaw, a feisty former kittypet who saved her life and captured her as a ThunderClan prisoner.

It was Bluestar who decided to spare her life, and she appointed Firepaw to care for Yellowfang as punishment for his breaking the warrior code. In time, Firepaw and Yellowfang developed a close bond, and Firepaw's instincts saved the life of Yellowfang when she was accused of stealing ThunderClan kits. Instead, she helped rescue them from ShadowClan, and when Spottedleaf died, succeeded her as ThunderClan medicine cat. In time, a young apprentice Cinderpaw was badly injured at the side of the Thunderpath, and she became Yellowfang's apprentice, unable to pursue her goal of a warrior.

Brokentail became a prisoner of ThunderClan, allowing Yellowfang to finally get close to her only son. His mistake, revealing to her that he murdered his own father, Raggedstar, for control of the Clan, ended his life. Yellowfang made the painful decision to kill Brokentail once and for all, and as he choked down her deathberries, Yellowfang told him the truth - who his mother really was.

When fire engulfed the camp, Yellowfang went back to the camp to try and save the elders. She never returned. Fireheart found her in her den, and shared her last moments. Before her death, Yellowfang left Fireheart with her secrets - that she had killed her own son, Brokentail, and that she thought of Fireheart as her own son.

Yellowfang returns in The Power Of Three to guide Jaypaw, the grandson of Firestar.
