Smudge is a plump black and white kittypet who wears a twoleg collar.
Smudge is a lazy kittypet who prefers the easy life of a twoleg pet, he does not understand his friend Fireheart's desire to be wild, and describes the warriors as "barbarians". Smudge is not brave or particularly intelligent, but he is friendly and kind-hearted.

Smudge is Rusty's kittenhood friend, and in the first chapter they make gossip about what lays beyond the fence. He makes few appearances after Rusty departs for the forest [ITW2]. Running into him later in the book [ITW10], Smudge is surprised that his old friend Rusty has become Firepaw -- and joined the warrior Clans, while Smudge has been neutered and has no desire to enter the forest again.
GENERAL
In Firestar's Quest Smudge seeks out Firestar for help, having recently had a reoccurring dream of forest cats. He fears that this means he must join the forest clans, but Firestar doesn't think so. Searching for a connection with SkyClan, Firestar discovers that their old camp was actually located in Smudge's backyard.
