Barley is very easy going and friendly, with an amount of modest street-smart intelligence. He is solitary by nature, but enjoys the companionship of other cats.

Barley is seen in this book when Bluestar and her small patrol meets him on their way back to the moonstone [ITW16]. Barley warns Bluestar that the farmer's dogs have been unleashed, so they take the other path, only to end up being attacked by vicious rats. Barley saves the day not before Bluestar looses a life, and Tigerclaw sends him away after the rats leave. Later on in the book Ravenpaw travels to live with Barley [ITW21] in order to escape from his mentor Tigerclaw, who is plotting his death.

GENERAL
Barley came from BloodClan with his sister Violet and his brothers Jumper and Hoot. When they came of age Hoot and Jumper sought out Bone to become guards, while Violet and Barley continued to live together against the rules. When they were found out, Barley's brothers nearly killed Violet under Scourge's command, so Barley took her broken body to a kittypet's home. The twolegs saved Violet's life, and she remained with them and their housecat Fuzz. Barley promised they would always be brother and sister. Now Barley lives on a barn at the edge of WindClan territory.
