Warriors vs Lion King

written by silentstorm

Who hasn't seen and loved the Lion King, and it's sequel? Sure, the cheesy musical numbers are a bit of overkill, but we love ‘em. Then there's Warriors. Sure, at least one character dies in each book, but we still love ‘em. In this article I'll be exploring the plot and character similarities within both different stories. Keep in mind that the original Lion King was based on Shakespear's Hamlet, while the second was based on Romeo And Juliet as in all great works of literature, bits of Shakespear can be found in both series.

1. The most obvious . . .

Lions are wild cats. The Clans are wild cats. Both species are members of the cat family. It's not really surprising, since cats have always created an image of majesty, strength, and independence that have inspired humans since very early ages. Cats have starred in many other animated movies, such as The Aristocats or the German horror animation Felidae. In The Lion King, the cats are the wild, powerful ancestors of the cats who star in Warriors, yet the name lion and many references appear in the books.

2. The Villains

Tigerstar was a large tabby cat with a battle-scarred pelt, including a distinctive scar across the bridge of his nose. Scar, the villain of The Lion King, was also a large, dark-coloured battle-scarred cat with a distinctive scar through his eye. Unlike Tigerstar though, Scar was an underdog seeking revenge against his brother and using his schemes rather then his brawn to defeat Mufasa.

3. The Heroes

Simba is a pale-ginger, red-maned lion and the hero of the first movie. Fireheart is a ginger-pelted cat and the protagonist of the first Warriors series. They share many personality traits, being bold and kind-hearted leaders who aren't afraid to break the rules once and awhile. Both cats fall in a love that started out as a sassy young friend, Sandstorm for Fireheart, and Nala for Simba. Notice how similar they are in looks and attitude -- both are much paler versions of their mates!

4. Banishment and Prejudice

Tigerstar was banished for his traitorous actions toward his Clan and Bluestar, while Scar’s kin was banished to the Outlands for his actions toward Mufasa and Simba. Like Kovu in The Lion King II, Brambleclaw, while accepted into the Clan still faces a huge amount of prejudice from within his Clan. Also note how close Simba and Scar became; they began to develop a relationship (though it was destroyed by Zira), and this directly mimics the mentor/apprenticeship of Brambleclaw and Fireheart.

5. Look-Alikes

In Warriors, Brambleclaw looks exactly like his father, Tigerstar, and Squirrelflight is a carbon copy of Firestar. Like Kovu, Brambleclaw's lionking-counterpart, he is a dark coloured tom, while Squirrelflight is a ginger she-cat. In The Lion King, Kovu is the spitting image of Scar and Kiara is Simba all over again.

6. Offspring Love

Brambleclaw (son of Tigerstar) and Squirrelflight (daughter of Firestar) fell in love in Warriors: The New Prophecy. Kovu (son of Scar) and Kiara (daughter of Simba) fell in love in The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride.

7. Death By… Yourself

Both Tigerstar and Scar were killed by things they brought into their homeland. Tigerstar was ripped to shreds by Scourge, who he brought into the Clans. Scar was killed by his very own pack of hyenas.

8. Enemies and Mistrust

Brambleclaw was not trusted by Firestar because of his father, who was Firestar’s enemy. Kovu, heir to Scar, was not trusted because of his kin, Simba’s enemy Scar. Both face must prejudice from their Clan because of their sinister heritage.

9. StarClan and The Great Kings

The Clan cats believe in StarClan, who govern them from the stars. The lions in The Lion King believe there are the great kings of the past looking down on them from the stars. Not exactly the same, but close, each culture has established a connection between the stars and their ancestors. If you have a copy of Secrets of The Clans handy, try looking on the first page at the illustration -- the head of a cat in the skies, strikingly similar to Mufasa's face in The Lion King.

10. Influence Is Potent

Brambleclaw walked in dreams with Tigerstar and Hawkfrost, making plans for the forest. Kovu was greatly influenced by his mother, Zira, and his brother Luka and sister Vitanni. Both cats were tempted by the plans of their kin, but didn’t follow through: Tigerstar’s plans for Brambleclaw to kill Firestar, and Zira’s plans for Kovu to kill Simba, each influenced by an even greater force -- love for their mates.
