The Real Antagonist?

written by Jaybird

As we all know, Hawkfrost was the presumed bad guy in the second series, The New Prophecy. But before all the half-brother, son of Tigerstar plot about him came in, there were the Twolegs who were destroying the forest. They were the antagonists, or true enemies, in the first half of the New Prophecy. But there is one more cat that was devious enough to be blamed as the major villain in the second series, one we all know too well. The real bad guy in the first series, murdered by Scourge by one slash to the belly, the dark brown tabby we all hate and love at the same time, Tigerstar!

You’re probably thinking, Tigerstar was the arch antagonist in the last series, not the second. WRONG! Think for a moment, how would Hawkfrost have gotten the devious plan to murder Firestar without inside help? Tigerstar was the one to inform Hawkfrost to test his brother by seeing if he’d kill his clan leader. Who was the cat that showed Hawkfrost and Brambleclaw how to become fierce warriors and tried to make them leaders of their clans and take over the forest? Tigerstar was that very cat.

It is debated on whom was the major antagonist, Hawkfrost, Tigerstar, or the Twolegs. The Twolegs were a major threat to the clans, being with the destruction of the forest, but really, they were not the arch enemies of the cats, because they had no idea they were there. They were not a direct enemy of the cats, they were more of an indirect threat. But Hawkfrost and Tigerstar were, well, at least Hawkfrost was, being that Tigerstar is in the Dark Forest. Hawkfrost is evil, as we learned in Sunset. Brambleclaw always fought with Squirellflight to prove his half-brother wasn’t evil and he was good, doing his best for RiverClan, and Squirrelflight always disapproved. It turned out Squirellflight was right, when we read this:
Sunset, page 291
He staggered as Hawkfrost gave him a vicious nudge, his tail lashing angrily. “What are you waiting for? This is what we have wanted all along, remember? Kill him now!"
Hawkfrost had planned from the beginning to kill Firestar. What loyal cat would kill another, especially a clan leader, in cold blood? It wasn’t even out in the open, it had been a trap, an ambush. This clearly pointed out that Hawkfrost was bad. But who had set the idea into the brown tabby’s head? Tigerstar!
Sunset, page 297
“Then you’re a fool,” Hawkfrost sneered. “And stupid too. You never realized this was a test. It was Tigerstar’s idea. He said that if you really deserved power, you would do anything to get it.”
Tigerstar set up the entire stage for Firestar’s murder. Clever, devious, and always to the last, ambitious. So, in these facts, it proves Tigerstar was the main villain, Hawkfrost only the pawn of Tigerstar’s chess board. But this is only an opinion, believe whatever you want. You can choose Tigerstar, Hawkfrost, or even the Twolegs as the main villain of the second series. Now, with the second series’ antagonist identified, the only thing now is to find the main villain of the Power of Three. It will be a she-cat, but everything is unclear. Hopefully the murky sight though will be uncovered in the next two books of the series, Dark River and Outcast.
