Jaykit is in pain, and he hears a voice who he assumes is Leafpool nearby. He recognizes that he's in Leafpool's den. Hollykit and Lionkit are not with him. He sees a tortoiseshell cat and realizes he's dreaming; she is not one he knows of, but she smells of ThunderClan, He wakes up and sees Leafpool, and they discuss his dream before Leafpool mentions to him that he is lucky StarClan favored him, he could have died.

She is obviously disappointed in all three of the kits. When he asks if Firestar will delay their apprentice ceremonies she tells him that he can not be a warrior like Hollykit and Lionkit, but proposes the idea that he become a medicine cat. Jaykit retorts that he doesn't want to care for sick cats and live in isolation like her and storms out.
