Firestar collects details on the fox from Thornclaw and Spiderleg, then asks Brambleclaw to assign patrols. Everyone's being sent out except Hollykit, Lionkit and Jaykit, and in frustration they ask Brambleclaw for a task. Lionkit is satisfied with his assigned duty of 'guarding the camp'. Jaykit is not. So he proposes they sneak out and find the foxes themselves.

They nearly run into a patrol while out of camp, but narrowly miss them and end up finding the fox den. They charge into the den, but are shocked to find out that fox cubs are a bit bigger then they expected! Wild with fear the three kits run for their lives. Before he can stop himself Jaykit runs over the edge of the cliff that marks ThunderClan camp . . .
