The chapter begins when Jaykit awakens in the nursery. His siblings, Hollykit and Lionkit, are already awake and playing a game of catch with a newly caught mouse. Jaykit joins in, determined not to let Lionkit win so easily. He leaps and misses his mark, landing on young Icekit and Foxkit, who are fortunately not injured. Ferncloud tells them to go outside.

Jaykit examines the camp going ons. Everything is calm and he notes that everyone is scrawny from leaf-bare hunger. He reflects that Molepaw and Rainwhisker died this leaf-bare. They resume the game with the prey, but Squirrelflight tells them to show more respect for their prey. The kits resolve to eat the mouse.

The three cats show their eagerness to leave camp by asking Leafpool if she needs help getting herbs after Jaykit finds a maggot-eaten piece of fresh-kill. She says no, so they begin play fighting again. Jaykit does not; he hears approaching cats. He's right, Spiderleg shows up with the news seconds later: There's a dead fox on ThunderClan territory!
