Firepaw meets the ThunderClan patrol while Yellowfang recruits her ShadowClan friends. Whitestorm, leading the patrol, takes Firepaw's word, and when Yellowfang's patrol returns they learn more about ShadowClan's brutal leadership. Since the death of Raggedstar Brokenstar has maintained a ring of elite warriors who would die for him. The rest of the Clan owes him no loyalty. The group of ShadowClan elders that Yellowfang gathers also have no allegiance to Brokenstar - he has abandoned them since they are too old to be deemed useful. The mismatched group agrees to team together to defeat Brokenstar.
