Though Bluestar is still impatient to return to camp the patrol's wounds slow them down. The sounds of fighting can be heard as they approach - it is as Bluestar has warned, the camp is being attacked by ShadowClan. Firepaw notices Blackfoot, ShadowClan's deputy attempting to steal ThunderClan kits after killing Rosetail. Yellowfang defends the nursery while the battle continues until ShadowClan is driven out. But the victory is not without a price, Lionheart has been killed. Though stricken with grief, Bluestar appoints a new deputy - Tigerclaw. Ravenpaw is horrified, claiming that Tigerclaw had coveted that position since "taking care" of Redtail.
