Fireheart wakes up, ready to take his new apprentice Cinderpaw out. He suggests that they train together with Graystripe, but the gray tom is still feeling melancholy after the death of Whiteclaw and says he'd rather train Brackenpaw alone. Fireheart is hurt, but takes his own apprentice out to explore the territory around the camp. Cinderpaw is very enthusiastic, and is bounding into trouble at every step. Fireheart has trouble remembering he is the mentor and not the apprentice! As they travel nearer to Twolegplace, they both see a pregnant kittypet wandering in the woods. Cinderpaw wants to chase it, but before she has a chance Fireheart brushes some bracken and she runs away.

Returning to camp Graystripe and Fireheart share tongues and compare notes over some fresh kill before going to sleep. Fireheart finds himself dreaming about his kittypet days, the scent of the she-cat they saw in the woods lingers within them. Suddenly Fireheart wakes up -- he remembers now, the she-cat is his sister!
