summary

The Clan recovers from the attack, and Bluestar takes the opportunity to commend Fireheart for his quick thinking in alerting the camp. She also gives Dustpaw and Sandpaw, who fought in the battle, their warrior names. They will be known as Dustpelt and Sandstorm and will stand silent vigil until dawn, though Bluestar gives them the opportunity to share a meal with the Clan before then. Sandstorm asks Fireheart if he wants to eat together, and he agrees, though is somewhat disappointed that Dustpelt, Whitestorm and Darkstripe will be joining them as well. He visits Cinderpaw to bring her a vole, and notices how close a bond the young cat has developed with Yellowfang. Cinderpaw isn't content though, and she even says maybe she should have fought and died in the battle, to save the Clan the burden of keeping her.

Fireheart wakes up the next morning as Bluestar calls a Clan meeting to discuss Brokentail. After this she approaches Fireheart and asks him to make up with Graystripe, as she does not like to see such divisions within the Clan. He tries, asking Graystripe if he'd like to go hunting, but it just causes another argument, Graystripe asking if Fireheart doesn't trust him. Fireheart gives up, telling his former friend that it was Bluestar who wanted them to hunt, to which Graystripe mocks him, saying that he always wants to please Bluestar. They hunt, but when they return Brindleface has startling news: her three kits, including Cloudkit have gone missing!
