The patrol of Sandpaw, Mousefur, Fireheart and Whitestorm sets off, and they soon are angrily surprised find ShadowClan scent on their territory. As Fireheart follows the strangely familiar scent, he finds rabbit bones on their territory -- whoever hunted here left it as a message, they want ThunderClan to know they were here. Whitestorm and Tigerclaw are furious when they return to camp, and Tigerclaw launches a war patrol of all the warriors left in camp, except for Fireheart. Fireheart will stay back and tell Bluestar what happened as soon as she returns -- she is out on patrol, but Tigerclaw insists that the attack must happen right away. Fireheart is the only warrior left in camp as soon as Yellowfang recognizes the awful decision Tigerclaw has made: it's Brokenstar's scent on the bones, not ShadowClan's! Fireheart sends Brackenpaw to call back the war party, and mounts the highrock to alert the Clan. Just as he announces the situation Brokenstar and his band appears; the remaining weakened ThunderClan must stand alone.
