Fireheart brings Cinderpaw back to camp -- she's alive, but Yellowfang can not say if she will survive. On top of this, Bluestar wants to see him. He sits with her as she sleeps, but as she awakes she has grave news -- she has lost a life -- one more and she will not come back.

Overwhelmed by tragedy, he goes back to see Yellowfang. She says that though Cinderpaw may survive she will never be a warrior. Fireheart offers to stay with her, but Yellowfang sends him off as soon he gets in he takes heck from Graystripe, who tells him to butt out of his affair with Silverstream. Fireheart, with Bluestar's lives and Cinderpaw's accident hanging over him, no longer cares.
