Bluestar has come down with greencough, so Fireheart must guard the entrance of her den until Yellowfang requests he goes to twoleg place and fetches some catnip. Before he leaves Dustpaw appears with an urgent request -- Bluestar is needed at the Thunderpath is the message from Tigerclaw, but she can not make it as she is sick. Dustpaw must guard the camp, so Fireheart agrees to get the catnip, come back, and then take Tigerclaw the message. Dustpaw protests, but is silenced by Yellowfang. Cinderpaw offers to take the message herself, but Fireheart again refuses and leaves the camp.

When Fireheart returns with the catnip he smells the excited scent of Cinderpaw, and worries that she has taken the message herself. He wants to search for her, but Tigerclaw still needs to be told that Bluestar can not come. He searches for Graystripe to help him find the apprentice, but his friend is not there. Left with little other choice Fireheart heads to the thunderpath border, but just as he arrives a chilling squeal (familiar from a dream) splits the air, and he sees the limp body of Cinderpaw laying at the thunderpath.
