Fireheart hides from a RiverClan patrol, but Silverstream scents him and sends Shadepaw and Stonefur away. He begs Silverstream to stop seeing Graystripe but she is as stubborn as he. Fireheart goes back to camp and visits Yellowfang who has grave news. Whitecough has invaded the camp, and Bluestar has fallen ill. They both know that Bluestar could lose her eighth life if the cough develops into greencough, which would leave her with only one other, and Tigerclaw as her successor.
