Hollypaw and Cinderpaw wake up on a warm newleaf morning, and attend to their duties after taking some fresh kill. While speaking with the elders on the subject of foxes, Cinderpaw says that foxes are really just a nuisance, and badgers are the worst. She says a particular thing - she hopes never to see another one again, even though Cinderpaw has never seen a badger. Hollypaw notices that Leafpool pauses with interest, but the oddity of her statement slips by.

Soon after Firestar calls the Clan for a meeting - the naming ceremony of Millie. But in the middle of the ceremony Millie asks him to stop, saying that she would rather keep her own name. Daisy and Brook agree, and the Clan is divided once again. Hollypaw wonders if StarClan will accept these cats even though names are a traditional part of the code.

After defending the non-clanners, Firestar calls the meeting to an end, and it is now time for Hollypaw, Cinderpaw, and Mousepaw to have a hunting assessment. The assessment goes well; Cinderpaw hunts in the open near ShadowClan border, while Hollypaw and Mousepaw stick to the undergrowth. Mousepaw has been particularly stubborn in his goal to catch a squirrel, and he decides to climb the Sky Oak to get one. Brackenfur and Spiderleg appear, concerned, but Mousepaw is already high in the tree. He gets stuck, so Cinderpaw goes to get him down. As soon as she reaches him, she slips, and tumbles to the ground.
