Lionpaw is dreaming, although he is unaware. In his dream, he returns from making dirt, only to have Hollypaw waiting for him accusingly. "I'm going to get you," she says, as if they are playing tag. Lionpaw comes closer, only to realize that her eyes are amber in this dream, not green! And suddenly, the cat becomes a leaping fox. He awakes from the nightmare, only to face Hollypaw and Cinderpaw, who annoy him for the remainder of the morning before Hollypaw, Berrypaw, and Lionpaw leave with their mentors for a training session.

In training they discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the other Clans, and Lionpaw has trouble remembering WindClan's weakness. Hollypaw teases him, so when it comes to a battle practice, Lionpaw looses his temper and tries to injure her. Brambleclaw, concerned, takes his son hunting. Together they discuss the way that Brambleclaw had to prove himself because of Tigerstar's crimes - and Lionpaw asks himself if Brambleclaw is defending Tigerstar.

Later on, Lionpaw is awakened by a stone tumbling down from the top of the hollow. He goes to investigate, and finds Heatherpaw, who has a secret to share with him. She takes him to an old fox den, and they go into the tunnel. To Lionpaw's surprise, the tunnel opens up into a grand cavern - an underground cave. They realize they can meet here without being caught. Heatherpaw says they can pretend to have their own Clan, and she proclaims herself Heatherstar, leader of DarkClan. Lionpaw returns to camp, catching a sparrow for the Clan to avoid suspicion, and feeling guilty when lying to his Clanmates about his whereabouts.
