Hollypaw begins her chapter dreaming about Willowpaw. In the dream, her friend is distraught, yet Hollypaw can't catch up to ask what's wrong. The body of Lionpaw beside her make an unwelcome awakening - his fur is soaking wet. Cinderpaw wakes up with her and they go to eat some freshkill, before Brackenfur requests her for hunting.

As they near the border, Hollypaw finds her thoughts wandering to ShadowCLan's three new kits, who are her kin. Brackenfur orders her to stop daydreaming and catch some prey to feed the Clan. Returning to camp again, Hollypaw finds Lionpaw and asks him why he's so tired. Lionpaw defensively snaps that he's fine, so Hollypaw goes to speak with her other brother. They end up discussing RiverClan's troubles before she is called away again to do a patrol with Cinderpaw, who puzzles all of them by knowing the scent of fox, even though she's never seen one before.

Later that night, Hollypaw finds Lionpaw out of his nest, and Cinderpaw offers to go with her and help look for him. Cinderpaw seems to have feelings she doesn't understand that Lionpaw is making a mistake that has been made before. Sure enough, they find out about Lionpaw's secret meetings with Heatherpaw. Hollypaw confronts them, and Lionpaw gets angry. They head back to camp.
