In this chapter Hollypaw, Lionpaw and Jaypaw practice their fighting skills, pretending that Brambleclaw and Squirrelflight are ShadowCLan warriors as they enter the camp. Squirrelflight scolds them and along to the fresh-kill pile, where they gossip about the upcoming gathering. Lionpaw is particularly looking forward to seeing Heatherpaw again, while Hollypaw is fretting over the way the Clans tend to target ThunderClan's mixed blood.

We skip ahead to ThunderClan approaching the island. They carefully cross the brige rather uneventfully - Berrypaw slips, but Brackenfur catches him. All three apprentices notice something is wrong with RiverClan, but their curiosity goes unsatisfied. Blackstar announces Tawnypelt's kits: Dawnkit, Flamekit, and Tigerkit, the last of which is met by silence. Soon it is time to leave, but Heatherpaw and Lionpaw make a promise to meet outside of gatherings.

Lionpaw is still pursuing Heatherpaw, and it looks as if she returns his feelings.

There are still tensions about ThunderCLan's mixed blood.

Crowfeather was staring at Leafpool, his eyes glittering. "Don't forget Breezepaw, ThunderClan actually celebrates mixed blood."

Leafpool jerked her head back as though Crowfeather had raked his claws acorss her muzzle. She turned quickly and hurried away.
