The story begins below an empty sky on what would be WindClan territory, but many moons ago. A young cat, Fallen Leaves, is bidding farewell to another group of cats, including his mother. The cats are murmuring worriedly about the possibility of rain, but Fallen Leaves has decided that today he will take the challenge to become a "sharpclaw" (warrior).

Fallen Leaves enters a tunnel that leads underground to a large cavern, where a frightful cat with no hair and bulging white eyes awaits him. This cat is Rock, who lives in the cave near their warrior ancestors. He warns Fallen Leaves again about the possibility of rain, and explains the custom to him. He must find the way out of the tunnels, or he will die in darkness. So Fallen Leaves departs from Rock, and enters the cavernous tunnels across the dark underground river.
