In this book, the first in the Warriors saga, a young kitty-pet named Rusty is invited into a Clan of wild forest cats. There he meets Graypaw, and becomes apprenticed to Bluestar, the clan leader. Firepaw goes through many adventures as he proves himself to ThunderClan. Yellowfang, a ShadowClan loner, is taken prisoner in ThunderClan, and later becomes the medicine cat when Spottedleaf is killed by a warrior, Clawface. Before she does, the Clan accuses her of Spottedleaf's murder, and the theft of two of ThunderClan's kits! Meanwhile Tigerclaw, ThunderClan's dark new deputy is spreading lies about Firepaw's friend, Ravenpaw. He is scheming to kill the apprentice, so Firepaw and Graypaw take him somewhere he will be safe: to leave the Clan and become a loner. Simultaneously, Firepaw and Graypaw desperately track the cat down and find out it is the enemy Clan, ShadowClan, which is responsible. They attack ShadowClan and reclaim the kits. Brokenstar, the tyrant leader of ShadowClan, is exiled.
