Hi everyone,
More fabulous news – all thanks to you! On Sunday January 14th,
Warriors finally hit the #1 spot on the New York Times
Bestseller List of children’s series. That means all the
Warriors books together were outselling all the Harry
Potters, all the Lemony Snickets, all the Captain Underpants… Just
when I thought we couldn’t have a better start to 2007 than seeing
Sunset reach #2, you have
proved me wrong. Thank you so, so much! This really is purrrrfect.
I’ve been doing a very exciting task this week: looking at the
illustrations for The Secrets of the Clans, the
insiders’ guide to all things Warriors which comes out
later this year. As well as maps, we now have artwork for each cat
and illustrations of key scenes like the flooding of RiverClan. It
feels like such a treat to have a professional artist bring
characters and landscapes to life.
But in a way, it introduces a kind of limit on one’s imagination, as
if to say Oh, that’s what Tigerstar is supposed to look like!
Luckily for me, the Warriors artist hasn’t strayed
from anything I had pictured in my head, but it’s a reason why
there’s a tiny part of me that is glad there hasn’t been a
Warriors movie yet. What if it looked completely different
to the cats in my head? Or the cats in yours? Because after all,
your Squirrelflight probably doesn’t look anything like mine, even
though each suits their personality perfectly. It’s such a gift to
be able to create scenes and characters for other people to read,
but it’s up to them to bring them to life in their own imaginations.
I know lots and lots of you are desperate for a movie production of
Firestar’s adventures – and I promise I’ll join you cheering and
whooping if we ever get the chance to see our cats onscreen – but in
the meantime, don’t underestimate how brilliant you are at conjuring
every little detail of the Clans’ world. Trust me, no one knows the
series as well as you do!
| Very best wishes, Erin |
